Driving a school bus 15,000 miles across the U.S. in 90 days is no ordinary feat—especially when your bus runs on refined French-fry grease. Yet this is the mission of 13 Middlebury College (VT) students traveling this fall under the guise of Project BioBus, Ltd. The result of a 2003 summer road trip of 13 friends, Project BioBus hits the road again; this time as an earnest advocacy trip for the implementation of biodiesel fuel into mainstream society. BioBus will stop in 22 cities to speak with schools, universities, and 'green institutions' —promoting biodiesel as a cleaner, healthier, domestic alternative to petroleum fuels. Specifically Project BioBus seeks to encourage communities' communication with local biodiesel distributors to develop cheaper, more environmentally sound school bus fleets powered by biodiesel.

FUEL: BIODIESEL. A safe, renewable, clean-burning, domestically produced fuel made from vegetable oil (soy, rapeseed, etc.). Not synonymous with vegetable oil, although refined from vegetable oil. To make biodiesel, vegetable oil is combined with lye and methanol in a process called transesterification. Usable in existing diesel engines without modification.

BUS: 1991 GMC diesel school bus, exterior painted to depict abundant cornfields. Slogan: "Think America, Think Biodiesel"

COAST-TO-COAST SCHEDULE: Bus heads south from Middlebury, VT on 9/13/04 through New England to NYC. Onto Washington, D.C. by 9/29/04 and then west to CA. Return trip through TX and Southeastern states. Tour ends in Washington, D.C. on 12/8/04.
