Coast-to-Coast
on the Grease of a Nation
For
Immediate Release
June 11, 2003 (Conway, Washington)
The
Project Bio Bus team completed their 4,500-mile cross-country
demonstration tour when they arrived here on schedule Tuesday
morning, delivering one Project Bio Bus member, who will
begin a four-week North Cascade rock-climbing school. The
Project Bio Bus is a 32-passenger school bus with its diesel
engine converted to run on recycled vegetable oil (RVO).
The Middlebury College (VT) student team of 13 left Middlebury,
Vermont on May 18th for a tour of rock climbing venues and
media appearances to promote the viability of RVO as a viable
alternative fuel source. Stops have included Miguel's Restaurant
(KY), BluesFest (Chicago), Wild Iris (WY), Fly Fishing (MT),
and today, a Middle School in Conway (WA). Greeting them
upon their arrival in Conway was picnic hosted by Project
Bio Bus sponsor, NOLS.
The no-cost recycled fuel RVO – grease from the nation's
fast-food establishments – has powered the team flawlessly,
and along the way captured the interest of a nation. Media
coverage to promote their support of this alternative fuel
has included the AP (VT), cnn.com, yahoo.com, CBS TV (Chicago),
Chicago Tribune, and the one-on-one support from more than
40,000 visits to the Project Bio Bus web-site (www.projectbiobus.com).
Corporate sponsors supporting the Project Bio Bus cause
include Columbus Foods (IL) and Sun Fuels (CO) producers
of biodiesel fuels (a mixture of RVO and diesel), climbing
gear provider Metolius (OR), NOLS, the National Outdoor
Leadership Schools (WY), Middlebury College (VT), and several
other corporate supporters and individual donors who responded
through the Project Bio Bus website.
With Project Bio Bus team members having been delivered
to their hometowns and summer commitments along the way,
the remaining Project Bio Bus members – now just two
of the original thirteen – are extending their original
planned itinerary, and heading south for more rock climbing
at Smith Rock (OR) and plans to arrive in Marin County (CA)
on June 13, for an invitation to participate in the Transportation
exhibit of the Marin County (CA) Fair from July 2 -6, with
its expected 110,000 visitors and the theme, The Bridge
for all Generations.
To
continue support of their alternative fuel causes, and find
an appropriate home for the RVO-powered Project Bio Bus
vehicle, the Bio Bus will be auctioned off during the Fair.
The winner will be selected on a combination of monetary
donation bid, and appropriateness of the bidder as an extended-care-giver
for the Bio Bus. Look for more information soon available
on the Project Bio Bus website. Also available soon –
both at the Fair and on the website – will be the
famous Project Bio Bus 2003-tour T-shirt (with the trademarked
Project Bio Bus phrase "Veggie Gives us Gas").
When
the team arrives in Marin County, the total four-week Project
Bio Bus tour will have covered 6,000 miles – from
Vermont to California – powered nearly all the way
and nearly cost-free on the pure RVO (grease) of a nation;
coast-to-coast (considering the original 200,00-mile school
bus was purchased in Rhode Island).
